Design Balance LLC is a sustainable design consulting firm providing services to private businesses, universities, architectural design firms, building owners, institutions and government agencies. The firm consults nationally on new construction, renovation and historic preservation projects. Design Balance helps clients develop their sustainable design goals, including reaching any level in the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating programs. Kelly A. Karmel, AIA, LEED AP founded Design Balance in 1996, and moved the firm to its home base in Missoula in 1998.
Sustainable Practices, Products, & Services:
We strive to practice what we preach, so we have incorporated the following sustainable initiatives into the firm: Approximately one third of the electrical energy is produced from an on-site PV array; the office has a well-insulated shell and operable windows; the office has a radiant heating system and an air-to-air heat exchanger; all finishes are low-VOC; we protect the indoor air quality with good ventilation, HEPA vacuum, green cleaning products and micro-fiber tools; employees telecommute three days per week; we purchase EnergyStar qualified office equipment; office paper is 100% post consumer recycled content; all copiers and printers print double-sided to conserve paper; we recycle cardboard, paper, magazines, newspaper, batteries and electronics; we use teleconferences, email and web conferences to minimize business travel; and we annually purchase green tags to offset our 100% of our use of electricity, natural gas, automotive and airline travel. Initiatives for 2010 include doubling the size of the PV solar array and using web conferencing more often.

Design Balance LLC was founded in 1996 to specialize in sustainable design consulting, and we were earlier adopters of several green building rating programs including LEED, Collaborative for High Performance Schools and Green Globes.
