Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are a subset of the broader “Carbon Offsets” market. An REC represents one MW of electricity generated from green power sources such as wind, solar or geothermal. How does the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates benefit Missoula Residents? • Helps fight global warming! • Promotes sustainable, less polluting energy sources • Reduces GHG emissions from electrical generation • Allows people or business that cannot install their own renewable energy sources to use renewable energy sources. • Generates money for Missoula that can be used for local renewable energy production or efficiency projects. • Positive public relations: can be used in promotional activities/marketing. Important Dates & Facts: Purchase a Renewable Energy Certitificate by August 31, 2010 to become a Green Power Pioneer.
