Green Power Missoula

About Green Power Missoula:
With the increased need to shift to renewable electricity sources that do not add greenhouse gases to our atmosphere, the City of Missoula has started to sell Renewable Energy Certificates through the Green Power Missoula Campaign. By purchasing renewable energy certificates, a person or business can offset their fossil fuel energy consumption, reduce carbon emissions, and invest in domestic energy sources.

Sustainable Practices, Products, & Services:
Green Power Missoula is a: • city-sponsored program to offset carbon produced through conventional electricity generation; • way for individuals or businesses to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) online through our partnership with Sterling Planet; and • by designating City of Missoula during your purchase, each REC will return 20% of proceeds to Missoula to be used to fund public projects in energy efficiency and other greenhouse gas mitigation strategies in our city What is a Renewable Energy Credit? Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are a subset of the broader “Carbon Offsets” market. An REC represents one MW of electricity generated from green power sources such as wind, solar or geothermal. By purchasing these certificates a person or business can displace their fossil fuel energy consumption, reduce carbon emissions from electricity generation, and increase the demand for renewably generated electricity. How does the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates benefit Missoula Residents? • Helps fight global warming! • Promotes sustainable, less polluting energy sources • Reduces GHG emissions from electrical generation • Allows people or business that cannot install their own renewable energy sources to use renewable energy sources. • Generates money for Missoula that can be used for local renewable energy production or efficiency projects. • Positive public relations: can be used in promotional activities/marketing.
