Fair Trade
Who We Are

The Fair Trade City Missoula Campaign is a volunteer group of individuals interested in promoting and raising awareness about Fair Trade.

Our Mission

The mission of the Fair Trade City Missoula Campaign is to contribute to a local and global economy based on human rights and environmental sustainability.  We do this by raising awareness of the benefits of fair trade, increasing the availability of fair trade goods in Missoula, and promoting policy changes that advance fair trade.

What Is Fair Trade?

A trading partnership based on dialogue, transparency, and respect that seeks greater equity in international trade.

For more than 60 years, Fair Trade has contributed to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to - and securing the rights of - marginalized producers - especially in the Global South.

Within Fair Trade there are:

Fair Trade CertifiedTM Products - Fair Trade Certification is currently available for coffee, tea and herbs, cocoa and chocolate, fresh fruit, sugar, honey, rice, vanilla, flowers, and other ingredients.

Fair Trade Organizations - Businesses and organizations whose full commitment to all of Fair Trade’s economic, social, and environmental criteria has been evaluated by the Fair Trade Federation and the International Fair Trade Association.

Fair Trade principles include:
· Fair price
· Fair labor conditions
· Direct trade
· Democratic & transparent organizations
· Community development
· Environmental sustainability

What Is A Fair Trade City?
Fair Trade Towns and the Fair Trade City Missoula Campaign mobilize communities to help create a better world by creating a deeper commitment to Fair Trade in the Missoula area through civic action, increasing consumer access in stores, and the education of both children and adults about the producers who grow and make the things that we buy.

For Missoula to become a Fair Trade City, five goals must be met:

1) A steering committee is formed and meets regularly;

2) A range of Fair Trade products is readily available in local stores, cafes, and other venues;

3) Local organizations and institutions use Fair Trade products in offices and at events;

4) The Fair Trade Towns initiative attracts visible public support, including media attention;

5) The governing body passes a resolution, committing the town or city to procure Fair Trade and to publicly support the movement.
